Live Debate: Guantanamo Bay
CFCC debaters will focus on the issue of whether Guantanamo Bay should remain open or be closed.  It will feature faculty/student teams and be conducted as a professional policy debate.

Culinary Arts Ice Carving Demonstration
There will be an ice carving demonstration between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. on the lawn in front of the Emmart Building.  “W” building and “Our Place” Restaurant

Travel and Tourism in Southeastern North Carolina
Hotel Restaurant Management instructor Jim Dishaw discusses area travel and tourism and its impact on Hotel Restaurant Management in the region.  The seminar will also address plans for the Convention Center.

 Culinary Arts Tour and Sampling Buffet
“Our Place” dining room will be open to the public.  Students will give tours of the kitchen facility and answer questions about the program. Guests may sample foods from a variety of production classes from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Waterfront Workshop Tour
Visit the Marine Technology program in the waterfront shops to see varied equipment used by today’s marine technician.  Visitors will see the evolution of technology from our inception in 1966 to today.  Come and participate in our marlinspike seamanship demonstrations.

What’s In Your Water?
presented by Chemical Technology
Do you want to find out what else you are drinking from your faucet?  If you are overflowing with curiosity, bring in a 1-gallon sample of water to the chemistry technology lab located in the Natural Science Building (N-302).  We will run a series of FREE analytical tests from your sample (including but not limited to pH, hardness, lead & iron concentrations, phosphates, nitrates, etc.) and we will mail the results to you within two to four weeks.  (Please keep your sample as cold as possible before drop-off.)

Germs: Up-close and Personal
Presented by Biology instructors Ken Hufham & Joy Smoots

  • What do germs look like and how do they work? Find out from the experts! Walk through a display of enlarged bacteria and find out the inside story of some of our most common germs. Examine them yourself through a microscope.
  • Also, see a display of actual (CSI-style) DNA analysis.
  • The exhibit will also include the dissection of a cow’s heart to show the inner workings of this most important organ works.

The Truth About Chemistry
Chemistry is the study of change.  An excellent way of gaining insight into the field of chemistry is to see it in action!  Rush over to the chemistry technology lab in the Natural Sciences Building to see various demonstrations and take a tour of our labs!

Native American Artifact Collection Tour

A lively tour and discussion of Native American artifacts that are on exhibit at the CFCC Library.  Most of the artifacts on display have been collected in the Eastern North Carolina area.  The oldest documented treasure is more than 10,000 years old.

Story Time with Mother Ducky
Mother Ducky (aka: CFCC Early Childhood Instructor Vicki Daughtery) will be hosting story time in the library, sharing her favorite stories.  The 9:30 a.m. story time will be aimed at younger children (2-4 years old).  The 10:15 a.m. story time is suitable for children ages 4-7 years old.  Of course, children of all ages are welcome.

Interior Designers of the Future
The Interior Design Program is a showcase of Student Interior Design Projects which demonstrate various examples of Residential and Commercial designs.  A number of venues are available for viewers to see including Artistic Room Renderings, Exotic Foreign Color Schemes, Beach Home Designs, Unique Restaurant Concepts, and Urban Lofts.  Also included are examples of CAD drawings of floor plans, and lighting plans.  Our future interior designers proudly display Interior Design Portfolios which show the breadth and scope of their completed education.

An expert will demonstrate a typical 3-way switch used in house wiring with the schematic.

Industrial Systems Demonstration

Home Design Tips from Architecture students
Faculty and students from the Architectural Technology Program will offer design comments and plan review comments about house plans for those considering on building a new home.  You must bring your plans with you for this review. Also available will be reviews to incorporate “green” and “sustainable” building features and products into a new or retrofit home.  If it is a new home, you must bring your plans with you for the review.  If it is a retrofit, photographs of your home, both interior and exterior, will make the review more worthwhile. Depending on availability and number of participants, reviews may be limited to 20 minutes per homeowner to allow all participants to receive a review.

What Are Fiber Optics?

This activity will demonstrate the proper installation of common fiber optic connectors used in the telecommunications and data networks today.

Mechanical Engineering Display
CFCC’s state-of-the-art rapid prototyping machine will be in action producing plastic parts from a virtual mold.  See examples of student designs and projects (solid models, detail drawings, and animations) created as part of the Mechanical Engineering Technology curriculum.  Door prizes of student-designed key chains created with the rapid prototype machine.

Nuclear Energy Exhibit
Learn about what CFCC graduates in Nuclear Maintenance Technology will be doing; see a video about a new nuclear plant design being offered to electric utilities; and look over hardware components used in nuclear reactors.
Participate in two demonstrations:  1. Measuring radiation levels of commonly used items; and 2. Dressing and undressing in anti-contamination clothing for entry into and exit from a simulated radiation area.

Inside Scoop About Working With Real Estate Agents
If you are interested in the differences between a Seller’s Agent, Buyer’s Agent, and a Dual Agent, you will be interested in this short informal presentation.  Laurel Pettys will present the “Working With Real Estate Agents” brochure from the NC Real Estate Commission.  She will discuss the various duties and services provided based on agency status.  To resolve some of the potential confusion surrounding agency relationships, North Carolina requires that real estate agents must disclose their agency status to both buyers and sellers.   Join us and find out when and how this is accomplished.

Law Enforcement Expo

  • Wilmington Police Department recruiters will discuss career opportunities and bring their friendly K-9 crew.
  • New Hanover County Police recruiters will also be on site to explore career possibilities.  The Department of Corrections will introduce their child-friendly dogs to the crowds. 
  • The Department of Natural Resources and Wildlife Enforcement will display vehicles and boats. 
  • The Southeastern Airborne Law Enforcement (SABLE) Helicopter will be open for tours. 
  • CFCC academic information booths will be available for Basic Law Enforcement (BLET) and Criminal Justice programs.

Local firefighters will conduct hands-on fire extinguisher training.  The New Hanover County Firefighters Association Fire Safety Trailer will be available with safety related activities for children.  The Airlink helicopter is also scheduled to visit.
