Businesses Can Find Out How to Get Money to Go Green at CFCC Workshop

 

WILMINGTON - A North Carolina Green Business Fund grant workshop will be held on December 1st from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Cape Fear Community College North Campus Auditorium in Wilmington.

 

The N.C. Green Business Fund offers competitive grants to assist small businesses to develop and commercialize promising green products and services for the marketplace, alternative energy technologies, and workforce development.  The key objectives of the workshop include:

 

1.  To provide general information on the NC Green Business Fund – (who is eligible and types of projects)

2.  Applying for an NC Green Business Fund award

3.  Writing an NC Green Business Fund proposal

 

Established in the 2007 Legislative Session, the North Carolina Green Business Fund  awards competitive grants to North Carolina organizations with innovative projects focused on three priority areas. In the 2008-01 Solicitation, the priority areas included:

  • Development and commercialization of the biofuels industry
  • Development and commercialization of the green building industry, and
  • Attraction and leverage of private sector investments and entrepreneurial growth in environmentally conscious clean technology and renewable energy products and businesses.

US Coast Guard-Approved Captains’ License Upgrade Course - Dec. 1

CFCC offers US Coast Guard-Approved Captain’s License Upgrade Course. Upgrade from the Operator of Uninspected Passenger Vessels (OUPV) License to Master’s License for vessels up to 100 Gross Tons. This 24-hour course concludes with the Coast Guard examination. Class will be on December 1-4 and December 8-9, 2008, 6:00-10:00 p.m. each night, in room S-212, on the CFCC downtown campus. Exam given on December 10 at 6:00 p.m. Cost: $58 for the course and $98 for the examination. Class size limited. Assistance Towing Endorsement - December 11, 2008

CFCC offers Assistance Towing Endorsement for Marine Captains’ Licenses. This 4-hour US Coast Guard-approved course is intended for those who hold, or are in the process of attaining, their OUPV 6-Passenger or Master’s Licenses. In order to commercially assist other vessels that may be aground, disabled, out of fuel, or experiencing some other malfunction, a boat operator must hold this “Assistance Towing” Endorsement on his or her Captain’s License. A short test is given at the conclusion of the course and passing students are awarded a Certificate of Completion. This is submitted to the Coast Guard who then adds the Endorsement to the License. Course will be held on Thursday, December 11, 2008, 6:00-10:00 p.m. in room S-212, on the CFCC downtown campus. Cost: $53. For further information contact Capt. Coastal Navigation - January 6, 2009

CFCC will offer Coastal Navigation beginning Tuesday, January 6-February 24, 2009, each Tuesday from 6:00-9:50 p.m. in room S-212, on the CFCC downtown campus. Detailed instruction on methods of chart plotting and piloting. Lots of hands-on exercises. While this course is not geared as an exam prep study, it will be very useful for students planning to take the US Coast Guard Captain’s license test. Required Materials: One nautical chart (#13205TR) and plotting instruments (dividers and Parallel rulers or equivalent). Cost: $63 payable on the first night class, seniors 65+ free. Celestial Navigation - January 7, 2009

CFCC will offer Celestial Navigation beginning on Wednesday, January 7, and then Thursdays, January 15-February 26, 2009, from 6:00-9:50 p.m. in room S-212, on the CFCC downtown campus. Theory and techniques for finding one’s position at sea using sextant observations of heavenly bodies will be presented. The Nautical Almanac and special sight reduction tables are utilized. Although GPS nagivation may be more accurate, celestial navigation remains a dependable alternative to electronics which every truly self-sufficient navigator should know. 6 Passenger OUPV Captain, 72 hour course and exam - October 27-November 24, 2008 and April 27-May 26, 2009

Upgrade from 6 Passenger to Master 100 Tons, 24 hour course and exam: December 1-4 and December 8-9, 2008, 6:00-10:00 p.m. each night. Exam given on December 10 at 6:00 p.m.

Assistance Towing Endorsement, 4 hour course offered December 11, 2008 and again May 27, 2009

Small Gasoline Engine Class - Jan. 10, 2009

Small Gasoline Engine Class to begin January 10 - February 14, 2009,  six Saturdays, 8:00 a.m.-2:30 p.m. on the CFCC downtown campus, Building W, Room 010. Cost $63.00. To register call 910-362-7189. Effective Teacher Training - Nov. 3 and Nov. 17

Effective Teacher Training is a 30 contact hour course that provides a valuable certificate for the unemployed, and underemployed. Retirees, part-time workers, and college and university students can substitute teach whenever a personal schedule allows. Individuals also select the grade levels they prefer to work in.
