Applying for Financial Aid

Students interested in applying for financial aid, including Federal Stafford and PLUS loans, must first complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).  Completion of a FAFSA is also strongly recommended for the students applying for CFCC scholarships.

The FAFSA requires income tax data from the most recently completed tax year.  For example, the 2008-09 FAFSA will ask for information from the 2007 federal income tax return.

The FAFSA can be completed at any time before the end of the academic year, which includes Fall, Spring, and Summer semesters.  We encourage students to apply for aid as soon as possible.  The best time to complete a FAFSA for the upcoming year is immediately after federal and state income tax returns have been prepared.

An applicant will receive a Student Aid Report (SAR) detailing Federal Pell Grant eligibility when processing is complete.  An Expected Family Contribution (EFC) of less than 4042 indicates Federal Pell Grant eligibility.

Electronic FAFSA

To complete the FAFSA online, the student and a parent (if applicable --see General Info link to determine Dependent or Independent status), obtain a PIN (PIN).  PIN's serve as electronic signatures on the FAFSA and are good for ten years.

FAFSA's can be submitted electronically without having a PIN, but the receipt of a paper signature page by the processor will be required before the FAFSA can be processed.

Keep PIN in a safe place. The PIN will be required to access your financial aid application data and to reapply for financial aid for future years.

**DO NOT SHARE YOUR PIN WITH ANYONE!!**

After obtaining a PIN, log on to the FAFSA web site (FAFSA) and complete the FAFSA for the appropriate school year.  Electronically-submitted FAFSA's process within 3-5 business days.

Paper FAFSA

Starting in January 2008, there will no longer be paper FAFSA's distributed to the school.  Students may call the Department of Education (800-4FEDAID) and request up to three (3) paper copies of the FAFSA.

After completing the paper FAFSA, the student is responsible for mailing it to the Federal processor.  Paper FAFSA's are processed within 10-14 business days.
